First Company
New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble’s First Company is the heart of the organization - a professional touring company of some of the best rhythm tappers in the dance world, whom the Newark Star-Ledger called “infectiously high-spirited.” Appearing throughout the season in NJTAP’s repertory and new works created by Artistic Director Deborah Mitchell and other company and guest choreographers, the first company’s horizons are ever expanding. The company also performs in collaboration with other major performing arts organizations and at tap dance festivals such as the New York City Tap Festival, Tap Extravaganza, and other festivals nationwide. The resumes of First Company members boast credits beyond NJTap: Black and Blue, Play On!, Riverdance, Tap Dogs, Steel City, Bring In 'Da Noise, Bring In 'Da Funk, tours with Savion Glover and ABC-TV’s "Dancing With The Stars." Auditions by Appointment - must be 18 and older
About Rhythm Tap
Rhythm Tap is a tap dance style created by dancers who produce intricate, rhythmic patterns and phrasing with their feet. In performance, the rhythm tap dancer becomes a percussive musical artist and instrument. Rhythm tap has a language of its own and a teaching methodology that has been handed down through a lineage from teacher to student. The company’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the art form’s American history and traditions.
